Parivarthan Counselling Helpline

PCH initiative was launched in 2011 as an exclusive resource for youth and children (YCH) to access anonymous counselling help. It evolved into its current format, a phone counselling helpline for all age groups as we began receiving calls from people of varied ages and recognised the need for a helpline that caters to the same.

Support

PCH provides immediate counselling support and crisis intervention. The number of calls handled has steadily increased over the years. The Helpline has handled over 4000 cases since its inception in 2011 to date. It attends to callers not only from throughout India but also from many overseas locations.

Benefit

This telephonic connectivity provided by Parivarthan benefits those who cannot access face-to-face counselling for reasons like unavailability, stigma, financial difficulties etc. . Widespread availability of phones today has made mental health care possible even in remote areas via the helpline.

Goal

Increase in number and reach of calls, as well as the feedback we receive from callers, help us believe that we are moving towards our goal of providing professional counselling service to all callers in distress.

Service

The Helpline working hours are 1 pm to 10 pm, Monday through Friday. This service is open to everyone and has been utilized by varied members of the community. The PCH caller profile is diverse and covers all genders, sexual identities, age groups, and economic strata. Depending on the nature of the case, the form of PCH assistance ranges from a one-time call to multiple sessions conducted over a maximum of 2-3 weeks to provide therapeutic assistance as well to enable the callers to connect with appropriate resources.

Team of Counsellors

The PCH team is well-qualified and trained to support people with concerns related to mental health and well-being. Counselling is provided in English, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Bengali. Counsellors are professionally supported by regular group supervision, peer support, training, and personal counselling. The team helps to address a wide range of challenges, including relationship issues, work, sexuality, loneliness, and exam fears as well as mental health concerns like depression and anxiety amongst others.

Confidentiality

Client confidentiality is given priority within ethical limitations. The Helpline adheres to guidelines of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) for ethical counselling services.

Free for All

The PCH services are provided pro bono to the community. As such, the Parivarthan staff has been partly supporting it by participating in fundraising events. The bulk of the funding comes from private and corporate donations, in addition to the corporate consulting work our staff members have been engaged in. Donations to the Helpline are welcome and can be made at our centre in Indiranagar, Bangalore.

Helpline

I like to express my gratitude for the help or suggestions that you have given me when I called your helpline number. Even when we pay and take appointments, people hesitate to listen to our concerns but to listen or understand our concerns with huge patience is not only excellent but also a greatly appreciative thing. After my call, I felt why can’t I help people in the same way or why can’t I give back the same help to somebody. I may not be able to do it immediately, but someday I will try to do the same for society.
I would like to say thank you all for helping people.

Helpline

Just around 10 mins ago I had a one-hour call with one of your volunteers. I have to say I am extremely grateful to her for having empathy for me that I was missing for such a long time. She patiently not just heard my story but also help me connect the dots together and made me realize how long I’ve come in my journey through my suffering.  Thanks to her. I don’t know her name but please inform her that I am grateful to her. God bless.
